GLA Borage Oil - Hypoallergenic
Back To Previous Page
This softgel formulation from Allergy Research Group® provides the highest potency gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) from borage oil. GLA is an omega-6 fatty acid and is considered a nutrient and semi-essential fatty acid. Borage oil is a potent GLA source, having the highest GLA content (23% min.) of any available oil. It is also a significant source of the essential linoleic acid, also an omega-6 fatty acid. GLA is a precursor for key prostaglandins, and has been found to support healthy circulation and cholesterol within normal levels, hormonal balance, women's health, and healthy skin and joints. *  GLA Borage Oil is hypoallergenic.

Although people in Western society consume too much of their calories as fats, some fats are important nutrients. These are the essential fatty acids, including linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid.  Like vitamins, these two fats are essential for metabolism and cannot be produced in the body from simpler molecules. Another fatty acid intermediate, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), may help some individuals bypass a "weak-link" in fatty acid metabolism (delta-6-desaturase), so can be classed as "semi-essential."

High intakes of cholesterol, saturated fats and hydrogenated fats ("trans-fats") may be undesirable, but essential fatty acids are positive factors in a personal program for good health. *

Description of GLA Borage Oil (Hypoallergenic) from Allergy Research Group®:

Borage oil is a rich source of essential fatty acids (EFA) of the omega-6 class.  The EFAs are oils that are rightfully termed "essential" because they are required for certain metabolic reactions and the body cannot make them from other substances. Being indispensable for all the body's tissues, the EFAs are equivalent to vitamins in their own right. *

Essential fatty acids have diverse roles in human health.  The human body is made up of approximately 100 trillion cells, each contained by membranes on which the majority of the work of the cells occurs.  The EFA makeup of these cell membranes strongly influences their structure and function.  Optimal EFA balance in the membranes helps optimize the approximately 100,000 chemical reactions that together make up our metabolism. The EFAs are also essential metabolic starting points for the production of substances called prostaglandins (PG).  These are hormone-like messenger substances important for the optimal functioning and homeostatic balance of all the organ systems. *

The many different types of PGs that can be generated from cell membrane fatty acids act together to influence our cells, tissues, and organs in a "yin-yang" fashion.  Optimal health requires optimal prostaglandin balance, which in turn is influenced by the fatty acid profile of the diet.  The omega-6 class of EFA is required in substantial quantities, at a minimum 7% to 10% of the total calories that we consume daily.  Omega-6 deficiency results in characteristic symptoms that include drying and flaking of the skin, hair loss, and impaired wound healing. *

Clinical research suggests that omega-6 fatty acids are often deficient in syndromes as diverse as alcoholism, atopic eczema, chronic fatigue, cystic fibrosis, hypertension, and the recovery phase of mononucleosis/Epstein-Barr infection. Though plentiful in human breast milk, GLA is absent from cow's milk.  Not being found in most common foods, GLA is likely to be low in the American diet. *

Furthermore, the modern Western diet provides an abundant supply of trans fatty acids (trans fat), which are generated from the heat processing hydrogenation of cooking oils and margarines.  Because they are not essential and provide no known health benefit, there is no safe level of trans fatty acids and people should eat as little of them as possible.  In July, 2003, the FDA published a final rule requiring manufacturers to list trans fatty acids on the Nutrition Facts panel of foods and some dietary supplements to help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.  Borage oil contains no trans fat.*

The omega-3 EFA alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) has not been detected in borage oil, and this oil apparently lacks omega-3 fatty acids.  Care should therefore be taken to supplement the diet with sources of omega-3 fatty acids, such as Allergy Research Group® Flax Seed Oil and Super EPA Fish Oil Concentrate. *

Borage oil is extracted and purified under strict quality control.  It is processed without trans-isomer formation.  It is non-toxic and is generally well-tolerated. *

*Hypoallergenic Defined:  According to Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary "hypoallergenic" is defined as:  "Diminished potential for causing an allergic reaction."   Allergy Research Group® defines hypoallergenic as "Free of all common allergens", specifically, wheat, corn, soy, gluten, yeast, dairy, and eggs. Many very sensitive individuals who reach to supplements in general, are able to tolerate Allergy Research Group® product.  Since our inception in 1979, we have been using only the purest, and whenever possible, the lowest allergy potential natural ingredients.  And while many of the nutrients in our formulas are synthesized from natural substances (plant sources), which as a whole may contain antigens, the synthesizing process removes the molecules of the desired nutrient from the original substance, and in the processing a great percentage of the antigens and allergens are left behind. The final material then has extremely low allergy potential.  This is not to say that no one will react to any of our hypoallergenic formulas, as some extremely sensitive people may.  However, the potential for an allergic reaction is low, and the feedback from many of our extremely allergic and sensitive customers is that Allergy Research Group® supplements are the only products they are able to tolerate.  (For further information about Allergy Research Group, click on their information link above)
