Progesterone is made in the ovaries of women, as well as the adrenal glands of both sexes. It is normal for women's progesterone levels to vary during the monthly menstrual cycle. During the first two weeks of a normal menstrual cycle, estrogen is the dominant hormone.  Starting just before ovulation, estrogen levels drop and progesterone levels increase, up to an average of 22 mg per day approximately a week after ovulation. Increased progesterone levels during ovulation increase the sex drive, but if the ova is not fertilized, progesterone production levels decline abruptly, triggering menstruation.  If fertilization occurs, the placenta takes over and increases progesterone production, with levels reaching as high as 400 mg per day during the last three months of pregnancy. Progesterone is critical for the survival of the fetus, and if levels drop, abortion follows. *
