| The liver is a complex organ with a variety of functions. It plays a major role in the detoxification of both endotoxins (metabolically produced toxins) and xenobiotics (environmental toxins). Detoxification is a process involving several different organs and occurs primarily in the liver where toxins, chemicals, cholesterol and fat-soluble toxins are filtered from the blood, using enzymes and the synthesis and secretion of bile. Allergy Research Group's® Liver Support products generally support the phase I and phase II functions of liver detoxification. In phase I, toxins are neutralized or transformed into intermediates which are then neutralized by the phase II enzymes. In phase II metabolic chemicals are enzymatically attached (conjugation) to the toxins which are then either neutralized or more easily excreted in the bile and urine. The liver's ability to detoxify potentially harmful substances is directly related to optimal health.* Description of Hepagenesis (Hypoallergenic) from Allergy Research Group®: Eclipta alba, also known as Eclipta prostrata, Han Lian Cao or false daisy, occurs all through the wet lowlands of East Asia, from China to Australia, typically near rice paddy fields. Traditionally cooked and eaten as a vegetable, the leaves are also used in Ayurvedic Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a cooling and restorative herb which supports the mind, nerves, liver, and eyes. The leaf extract is considered to be a powerful liver tonic and rejuvenative, and especially good for the hair. A black dye obtained from Eclipta alba is also used for dyeing hair and for tattooing. * The earliest known record of Eclipta alba occurs in the Tang Dynasty Materia Medica, known as Tang Bencao or Xinxiu Bencao, which was sponsored by the Tang Imperial Court in 659 A.D. In TCM, Eclipta alba is said to nourish yin and tonify the kidneys, and to cool the blood and stop bleeding. Conditions characterized by yin deficiency of the liver and kidneys include dropsy and liver complaints, anemia, diphtheria, tinnitus, tooth loss, dizziness, vertigo, blurred vision, and premature graying of the hair. Practitioners of TCM also use Eclipta alba for yin deficiency with internal heat causing extravasation of blood, including vomiting with blood, epistaxis, hematuria, bloody stool, and uterine bleeding. The Ayurvedic tradition also uses Eclipta alba, called Bhringaraja, Kesharaja, or Kesharanjana, and it is considered a primary herb to address liver cirrhosis, infective hepatitis, liver enlargement, jaundice, and other liver conditions. Arabian medicine also uses Eclipta alba, known as "Kadim-el-bint", to support liver function. * Eclipta alba also has traditional external uses. It has been applied to athlete's foot, eczema and dermatitis, on the scalp to address hair loss, and the leaves have been used in the treatment of scorpion stings. It has also been used externally to stop bleeding. * Researchers have confirmed some of these traditional uses. One in vitro study used fresh extracts of rat liver to study the protective effects of Eclipta alba against known liver toxins, including carbon tetrachloride (CC1) and phalloidin, the toxin from the Amanita mushroom. Therapeutic concentrations of Eclipta alba provided complete protection of the liver cells. In vivo studies with mice followed, in which the mice were treated with phalloidin or CC1. The mice given Eclipta alba were protected and all survived, whereas the control group not given the herb had a 70% mortality rate. This study showed that Eclipta alba provides hepatoprotective activity by regulating the levels of hepatic microsomal drug-metabolizing enzymes, such as amidopyrine N-demethylase. The extract of Eclipta alba did not show any evidence of toxicity. * Eclipta alba has demonstrated antimyotoxic and antihemorrhagic effects, involving in vivo neutralization of myotoxicity of snake venoms and myotoxins. It is thought that this is due to the antiproteolytic and antiphospholipase A2 activities of wedelolactone, an active ingredient. Another study showed that Eclipta alba can help support immune function. It was fed to mice with two other herbs for seven days, increasing the conversion of lymphocytes and raising the serum IgG level of the mice. Thymus and spleen weights also increased. * Besides wedelolactone, the active ingredients of Eclipta alba include dimethyl-wedelolactone, stigmasterol, B-sitosterol, ascorbic acid, ecliptal, the alkaloid ecliptine, and thiophene acetylenes, with high amounts of alpha-terthenyl. Wedelolactone, a coumestan, promotes aggressive scavenging of oxygen free radicals, selectively inhibiting inflammatory chemicals such as 5-lipoxygenase.* Other minor components include apigenin, luteolin, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid and protocateuic acid. Modern clinicians report that Eclipta alba may be beneficially included for many conditions that involve the liver, such as fatty liver and cirrhosis, hepatitis B and C, or to assist liver regeneration. Some consider it of crucial importance to address alcoholic liver or drug induced toxicity. It has been observed to support sleeping, restoration of hair color and age-related memory loss, and to fight canker sores, cytomegalovirus and adenovirus, with studies showing some inhibition of HBV DNA polymerase. Eclipta alba also has been shown to support inhibition of increased levels of histamine due to chronic inflammation. * Eclipta alba has been found to be effective as a single herb and can be used for extended time periods. Often users observe benefits beginning after one to two months. Eclipta alba is generally well tolerated with no side effects and a high margin of safety. * References available upon request. *Hypoallergenic Defined: According to Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary "hypoallergenic" is defined as: "Diminished potential for causing an allergic reaction." Allergy Research Group® defines hypoallergenic as "Free of all common allergens", specifically, wheat, corn, soy, gluten, yeast, dairy, and eggs. Many very sensitive individuals who reach to supplements in general, are able to tolerate Allergy Research Group® product. Since our inception in 1979, we have been using only the purest, and whenever possible, the lowest allergy potential natural ingredients. And while many of the nutrients in our formulas are synthesized from natural substances (plant sources), which as a whole may contain antigens, the synthesizing process removes the molecules of the desired nutrient from the original substance, and in the processing a great percentage of the antigens and allergens are left behind. The final material then has extremely low allergy potential. This is not to say that no one will react to any of our hypoallergenic formulas, as some extremely sensitive people may. However, the potential for an allergic reaction is low, and the feedback from many of our extremely allergic and sensitive customers is that Allergy Research Group® supplements are the only products they are able to tolerate.
